It’s nearly summer here, which means we’ll be getting our grill ready to go soon. We absolutely love grilling season, which is why we’re so excited about our new recipe for super juicy blue cheese burgers with avocado!
The blue cheese and avocado perfectly complement the herbs and seasoning in the juicy beef patty. We’ve also added a secret ingredient to really bring this burger over the top – sweet Italian pork sausage!
How Do I Make My Burgers Super Juicy?
There are two things you need for super juicy, flavorful grilled burgers: fat and seasoning.
For the best tasting burgers, choose ground meat with a higher fat content. For example, pick regular ground beef instead of ground chuck, round, or sirloin.
If the package labeling doesn’t clearly indicate what you are buying, don’t be afraid to ask the person behind the meat counter to point you in the right direction.
How Do I Make a Really Flavorful Burger?
On its own, ground beef doesn’t have much flavor, so it’s important to add additional seasoning.
For this recipe, we used a combination of sweet Italian pork sausage, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, onion, garlic, and fresh rosemary in the patties, then top with blue cheese and avocado. This packs a lot of flavor into each bite!
As an added bonus, the Worcestershire sauce and onion increase the juiciness of the burger without adding a lot of extra fat.
What Other Toppings Can Be Used on Blue Cheese Burgers?
Although this recipe doesn’t specifically call for bacon, it is a wonderful addition to the blue cheese and avocado.
Of course you can also use your normal favorite burger toppings, like lettuce, tomato, and your choice of condiments.
Let us know in the comments what combination of toppings you used. We’re always on the lookout for interesting new things to try!
Grilled Blue Cheese Burgers Recipe
Ingredients:
- Nonstick cooking spray
- 2 lb regular ground beef
- 1 lb sweet Italian pork sausage
- 3 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup very finely minced or grated white onion
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 Tbsp finely minced fresh rosemary (stems removed)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Blue cheese
- Sliced avocado (from approximately 4-6 avocados)
- 8 buns, for serving
- Additional toppings, to taste: lettuce, tomato, bacon, your favorite condiments
Directions:
Clean the grill grates and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Line a baking sheet or tray.
Add the ground beef, sausage, Worcestershire sauce, onion, garlic, rosemary, salt, and pepper to a large bowl. Combine thoroughly. Make sure both types of meat and all seasonings are completely incorporated throughout the mixture.
Divide the meat mixture into 8 equal parts and shape each into 3/4 inch thick patties.
Place the patties on the prepared baking sheet and use your thumb to create an indent in the middle to keep them from puffing up while cooking.
Cook patties on the grill over direct, high heat for 8-10 minutes. Final cooking time will vary.
When the burgers seem to be about 2-3 minutes away from being done, move them to indirect heat and top with the blue cheese. Close the grill’s lid and allow the cheese to melt completely.
Serve on toasted buns and topped with sliced avocado and your other preferred toppings (bacon, lettuce, tomato, etc.) and condiments.
Carolina Coleslaw
We love to serve these burgers with Carolina coleslaw. Instead of the mayonnaise-based coleslaw you may be used to, this recipe uses apple cider vinegar, so it’s lighter and more flavorful.
These blue cheese burgers, with the avocado and bacon and any other toppings you choose, plus the Carolina coleslaw all adds up to perfection.
What Other Side Dishes Go With These Blue Cheese Burgers?
Throwing together a delicious grilled meal is never too hard in our household because there are just SO many delicious options. We often just wrap some corn on the cob in tin foil and throw that onto the barbecue along with our main dish.
Tin foil packets work well on the barbecue, too, and they’re so easy! My favorite is to take chopped potatoes, onions, and garlic, drizzle olive oil over top, and sprinkle everything with shredded Parmesan, salt, and pepper. Yum!
For something that looks fancy, tastes delicious, but is the easiest thing ever to make, you should definitely try this Grilled Caprese Salad on a Stick. It works great as an appetizer for a summer get-together, or a side dish for when you want a fun treat.
We also love this yummy Peach Slaw, or just about any grilled fruit.
For dessert, why not throw together some Banana Boats – a childhood favorite! – or pick a delicious pie to serve. (Everything is better with pie.)
